Château d'Yquem 1947

Tasting notes

"The 1947 Château d'Yquem is one of the legendary vintages of the 20th century, even if consensus seems to be that it is not quite up there with the monumental 1945. However, it is still a bona fide classic Yquem that after almost seven decades is still doling out pleasure. It is certainly deep in color, burnished amber, deeper than the 1945 as I remember it. The nose is ethereal. (...) The nose offers quince and rosewater, a touch of wilted rose petals, even crushed strawberry. The palate has the weight and presence of that hot vintage, albeit not the electrifying tension of the 1945. There is more corpulence here, more heft and yet that razor-sharp acidity keeps everything perfectly in place -- maintaining immense freshness and vitality on the sustained finish. It was, and it is, a brilliant Yquem."

INFORMATIONS ABOUT THE ESTATE

The Yquem estate comprises 188 hectares, of which 110 are planted to vines and 105 are generally in production.

Only the portion of the harvest judged to be perfect is bottled under the Château d'Yquem label, and in certain years the entire harvest may be declassified. This was the case, for example, in 1964, 1972, 1974, 1992 and recently in 2012.

In certain years, Château d'Yquem produces a small amount of dry white wine composed of 50 % Sauvignon and 50 % Sémillion: Y, whose bouquet and power make it stand out among the white wines of Bordeaux.
