"The 1990 Barolo Gavarini Vigna Chiniera is incredibly fresh, vibrant and concentrated. This powerful Barolo flows from the glass with layers of rich, dense fruit. Blessed with sensual perfume, the 1990 Gavarini Vigna Chiniera remains compelling beyond words. Sweet licorice, spices and tobacco linger on an extraordinary finish. Stylistically, the 1990 presents a decidedly more opulent expression of fruit than the more delineated and aromatic 1989. Nevertheless, it remains an exceptionally thrilling bottle of Barolo with a long life ahead of it. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025. "

Elio Grasso is a self-declared disciple of Aldo Conterno. He was always an admirer of the Conterno estate.

The sandy soils of Gavarini make a different style of Barolo than the clay based soils of Ginestra. Matured in large Slovenian botte, the colour is deep and the nose somewhat unevolved.
